As a G3, I take pride in knowing that I follow in a long line of successful family members in multiple businesses(some not so successful) over the last 4 generations. Families in businesses together experience all sorts of different challenges. Separating work from family is not easy. I feel deep gratitude that Carl and Anna have been determined to create their own success stories in our family business. How often does this happen at G4! My proudest accomplishments have to do with how I’ve personally extended whatever legacy our family has. For both of our children to have an interest and then grow into our business needs are very special.
Starting out at our original business, Eastside Glass & Paint, I dusted shelves and swept floors at the store on Main Street. I licked stamps and stuffed billing envelopes on our living room floor. I worked in and ran our retail store for many years. Fast forward to when we closed the store in 1986, I pivoted into running our in-house property management work. My brothers and I operated a number of construction related businesses for decades. Then I took on development projects on our own property from the mid-90’s. A light industrial project in Kirkland followed by the 110-unit mixed use, Courtyard Off Main Apartments in 1999 were my first projects. I learned along the way. In 2001 we lost the Main Place retail building our parents built on Main Street to a fire. We rebuilt the Main Place Apartments, a 30-unit mixed use building in 2005. Rebuilding after a devastating fire was a whole other experience.
In 2013, after both parents had passed away, I was able to buy out my 2 brothers. I then worked with Carl and Anna to entitle and then sell our Main Street Gateway project (now the Venn at Main Apartments), a 360-unit mixed use building at Main Street and Bellevue Way NE. That project then sold after its development.
My deep involvement in the Bellevue Downtown Association on land use issues, Bellevue comprehensive planning work multiple times, short-term parking planning work, Downtown Park and Meydenbauer Beach Park Steering Committees, Downtown Transit Center location planning, and Old Bellevue Merchant Association efforts has given me more education. Entitling 3 projects in Old Bellevue and developing 2 of those has given me a very hands-on understanding of how to develop projects and work with the city. I’ve worked with partners, lenders, and brokers to finance these projects.
I’m grateful for my family’s values and customer first approach to everything. I’ve worked with many people who I’ve learned from since the mid 70’s. From Bellevue Rotary Club to Lake Washington Youth Soccer to the Eastside Heritage Center to the BDA and Bellevue Chamber, all in leadership roles. I was able to work alongside my parents and other relatives for a long time. I look forward to the next chapter.
